About

I was born in Angola in 1972. I have lived in Geneva since 1991.

I discovered photography with my father’s old Canon AE-1. I am self-taught: from books and magazines, from looking at real prints whenever I could, and above all from trial and error in the darkroom. I built my first darkroom in 1991. I have worked with a large-format view camera since 2000.

In 2002 I took to the roads of France with my view camera. That journey became Franca Terra. Since then I have worked on long projects, usually on the road. For The Port Wine Route I followed the Douro for most of 2008, from Porto to the Spanish border, alone in a 1977 Volkswagen bus, with music and books. The engine often stalled, and almost every time there was a photograph to be made nearby.

I make my own prints, in platinum/palladium or on fibre-based silver paper. Brushing the sensitiser onto the paper, rocking the developer tray through three minutes that feel like thirty: that is where photographs are made too.

My prints are held in private and institutional collections, including the reference collection of the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles, the Southeast Museum of Photography in Florida and the Port Wine Museum in Porto. My books are published by Exposure Books.

Photography is a journey.
